Task 3: Design

1. Task 3 brief recap:

After analysing the design in Task 2, I nee to produce a work of design inspired/influenced by it. My knowledge of design principles should also be applied here. Any medium or materials are suitable for this task. Direct use of photographs is not permitted. If my work is found to be plagiarised it will result in an F grade.

2. Visual references:

Na'vi and Tulkun bonds from the Avatar: The Way of Water film

Video calls from the Cyberpunk 2077 video game

Cyberware from Cyberpunk 2077 video game

The concept of Solarpunk

3. 3-5 sketches of my own ideas:

Sketch 1

For this sketch I was thinking of referencing directly from the movie, showing a Na'vi mother telling the story of a Tulkun's life to her children from the tattoos that they have.

Sketch 2

For this sketch I wanted to take my own approach to it and draw a human and a dolphin talking to each other, showing off the bond that they have. This was also when I remembered about the game Cyberpunk 2077and how I really liked it and then also thought about using Solarpunk as a basis. I was also thinking "what is the humans in the Avatar movies took a different approach to their development of technology?".
 Sketch 3

For this sketch, It's basically the same as Sketch 2 just in portrait because I think it looks better.

4. Final design:

5. Rationale:

I wanted to show off a future where humans would be able to communicate with animals just as easily as the Na'vi communicate with the wildlife on Pandora. In this future I believe humans were able to progress alongside nature as they developed technology in a sustainable way, keeping both themselves and their surroundings in mind. I was also inspired by an alternative to Cyberpunk - Solarpunk. It is a subgenre of speculative fiction that instead of being a dystopian cyberspace, it envisions the progression of technology alongside the environment. I was inspired by Cyberpunk though in way of giving him cybernetic implants that would let him breathe underwater and communicate with the wildlife. I used several design principles intentionally here, most notably being contrast, emphasis, balance, and harmony. Emphasis is used hand in hand with contrast by using bright highlights on the man and the dolphin, making them contrast with the darker background and foreground while also putting emphasis on them as the main subject of the artwork. Balance can be seen with the man and dolphin being on two opposite sides around the center of the artwork and harmony is evident in the color palette in the background of the artwork.

6. Feedback from the lecturer:

Everything so far is good, just need to improve the background and change the clothes.

  1. You have the potential to be a visionary director and animator! Ideas and composition is well developing and you can be how effective it is! But you need to be more certain about your graphic treatment. Keep practicing this. the more you do, the more you will discover and develop your own style! Good work!
